7. The genus Farlowiella Saccardo

Farlowia Saccardo, 1883

Wehmeyer (1975): “The species of this monotypic genus have elongate superficial ascostromata with longitudinal slits and one-celled papillate ascospores. A conidial state, Monotospora megalospora has been reported by Mason (1914).” Two species have been described.

 

A. Ascospores unequal two-celled; upper cell pigmented, much larger than lower cell; lower cell hyaline, smaller, subtending larger upper cell; measuring 18 – 21 x 7 – 12 μm:

= Farlowiella carmichaeliana (Berk.) Sacc.

Syll. Fung. IX, 1891, 1101. Rare. Europe (England, Belgium, Switzerland). Old bark and wood of: Fagus, Quercus, Sorbus & Prunus.

B. Ascospores as above, but small and measuring 13 – 15 x 6 – 7.5 μm:

Farlowiella australis Dennis

Res. Norweg. Sci. Exped. to Tristan da Cunha (1937-1938), Nr. 36, 1955, 7 (Oslo). Rare. Collected from bark of Phylica.
